Seams Fun...

A crafty Mom's thoughts and projects.

You have to start somewhere...

I learned to sew this summer. Several years ago my mom bought me a sewing machine for Christmas. I got it out of the box the day after Christmas looked at the directions decided it was WAY to complicated for me and stuck it back in the box. It stayed in the box through two moves and probably 4 or 5 different closets. So early this spring my younger sister decided that she wanted to sew more so she bought a nicer machine and started producing these really cute projects after just a few short lessons from my Mom. Well some of that sibling rivalry kicked and and I said "Well if SHE can do it, then I can do it." And a few short minutes later there I sat in front of my very basic Brother sewing machine. My mom and sister came over for my first lesson. They showed me the basics of how my machine works...I mean the basics...."The petal makes the needle go up and down" kind of instructions. They showed me the basics of how a pattern works and then left me to it. I fussed and cussed over my first independent project. It was a baby's sun hat. Someone should have warned me ahead of time that circles are hard for a beginners. I kept at it for several days and finally finished it. It wasn't perfect but it definitely looked like a sun hat. Fast forward several months later, I can thread my machine blind folded and have completed so many cute projects I can't list them all. My point being people that this isn't rocket science. You can do it. It just takes a little practice and a good seam ripper. So get your sewing machines out of the closet and lets get started!!
